Introducing Priority Air Mail service to our international customers

Mail serviceAt Skiviez, our international customers have long enjoyed our economic air mail shipping service and our fast FedEx International shipping service when it comes to getting their men’s underwear delivered to them quickly.

Today, we’re happy to introduce a new option for our international customers: Priority Air Mail service.

What about the existing service? Did you raise prices?


Nope. The pricing is the same; we’ve just added a new option.

Our existing air mail service has been renamed to Economy Air Mail, but it’s the same, inexpensive service that we’ve always provided. These parcels ship out via USPS First Class Mail International as part of the Universal Postal Union’s (UPU) Letter-post convention. They don’t have reliable tracking numbers, and while the parcels almost always reach their destination, the delivery timeframe can vary greatly. Most delays are due to customs clearance in the destination country, with delivery taking up to 60 business days in some cases.

This service offers you great savings when you don’t mind waiting several weeks for your item to arrive, but it can be a bit frustrating for those of you who wanted a faster UPU-based option.

What’s so great about the new service?


The new Priority Air Mail service is the next step up and sits between Economy Air Mail and FedEx International, our premium shipping option. It offers shipping via USPS Priority Mail International. It has reliable tracking numbers, and delivery is usually within 10 business days.

We also to continue to offer our extremely competitive FedEx International shipping option which offers the ultimate in reliability and tracking visibility with delivery usually within 5 business days or fewer.

After introducing landmark upgrades to our Web site, adding customer-submitted images to product reviews, deploying Skiviez Mobile, and supporting “Login with Facebook”, we’re proud to introduce a feature that’s been in the making for a long time: Skiviez gift cards.

Buying clothes for a friend–much more underwear for an undies fan–isn’t always easy. Guessing the incorrect size can be insulting, and your suggested fashion choice can lead to an awkward conversation. With a gift card from Skiviez, you can have the best of both worlds.

Easy to buy

Buying a Skiviez gift card couldn’t be simpler. Just click the “Purchase Now” button, enter your address and credit card information, select a gift card amount, and poof! your gift card is on its way to you. Shipping is free via USPS First Class Mail, which means you’ll have it in your hot little hands typically within just 2-3 business days.

In an effort to reduce fraud and increase customer security, however, we do place a few important restrictions on gift card purchases:

You have to use a credit card to purchase the gift card. (This is so we can verify the billing address.)

The gift card has to be shipped to the address that’s on file for the credit card. (To purchase a gift card for a friend, you’ll first need to have the gift card shipped to you–which most people prefer anyway so that they can stick it in a card or wrap it.)

You can track the fulfillment of your gift card sales order via “Your Account” on our Web site.

Easy to keep

A Skiviez gift card is an attractive, plastic card that’s easy to carry in a wallet. The card never expires.

(There is a $2.50 monthly inactivity fee that begins when the card hasn’t been used in over 12 months, though, but we don’t do this to be mean. This is just so that we can eventually get unused gift cards off of our accountant’s books. Imagine writing a check and someone cashing it over a year later! You have over a year to make a purchase at Skiviez, and any purchase resets the 12 month inactivity counter. You can read the full gift card terms and conditions here.)

Looking up the balance and usage history of your Skiviez gift card is easy, too. Just visit our gift card balance lookup page, enter the two numbers printed on the back on the card, and then you’ll be able to see the remaining balance as well as a ledger that shows exactly how the card has been used.

Easy to use

When you’d like to make a purchase at Skiviez using your gift card, that’s easy, too. You don’t even need to have a credit card if the gift card will cover the whole balance. Just enter the two numbers on the back of the card on our one-page checkout and press the red “Redeem” button, and you’re done!

In addition to the customer-submitted product review images feature and numerous other enhancements that we’ve added to the Skiviez Web site, we’re now proud to introduce Skiviez Mobile, an HTML5-based, mobile-friendly version of the Skiviez Web site. Just go to http://www.skiviez.com/ on your iPhone or Android device, and you’ll be whisked away to a version of Skiviez that’s designed to help you when you’re on the go.

Streamlined product catalog

Introducing Skiviez MobileDon’t get us wrong–our full site is lauded by our customers for its streamlined navigation and no-nonsense filtering interface. But navigating a site designed for a large display and a mouse is always going to be less than ideal when you’re on a mobile device. Have you ever wanted to show a Skiviez product to a friend at a bar (which, of course, always seems to have spotty or non-existent 3G coverage) but dreaded the experience of zooming through a full-featured site?

That’s why Skiviez Mobile offers a browsable, list-based view of the product catalog with finger-sized buttons that let you drill down to the brands and styles that you want to see.

Once you’ve arrived at a product page, we display only the most pertinent information without the fluff: images, fabric information, and customer reviews. This ensures that the pages load fast while you’re on a mobile network but still contain all of the detailed product information that you’ve come to expect from Skiviez.

You’ve added them to your mobile shopping cart, but maybe you’re not comfortable with paying via your phone just yet–or maybe you don’t have the time. Thanks to the “E-mail Cart” feature, you can e-mail your shopping cart to yourself or to a friend and complete your purchase when you’re near a personal computer!

We respect your privacy, and by using the “E-mail Cart” feature, neither your nor your friend’s e-mail addresses are added to any mailing list.

The customer is always right

While we try to do the right thing and redirect you to a mobile version of a Web page when one exists at the Skiviez site, you’re not locked in. Just go to “Your Account” and set your Mobile Site Preference. If you’d rather see the full Skiviez site, just select that option, and we’ll leave you alone. Shopping carts, customer accounts, and preferences are all shared between the full site and the mobile site, so you don’t have to worry about your data existing in two places or getting out of sync.

We didn’t build a mobile site for the fun of it. We built one because you asked for it. Mobile devices are becoming ubiquitous and more popular than ever, and you told us that you like to be able to quickly show a product to a friend at the bar or make a quick purchase while on the run.

Introducing new product review features to improve the shopping experience

No-holds-barred, honest customer product reviews aren’t a new thing at Skiviez by any means–we’ve been offering customers the ability to leave product reviews since January 2004, well before Web 2.0 and social media. We’re continuing this tradition of improving the customer experience by releasing a few upgrades to our product reviews system.

Helpfulness voting

Once you’re signed into Your Account, you’ll see a “thumbs up” and “thumbs down” icon next to each review. If you think the review is helpful, hit “thumbs up”. Over time, we’ll be able to sort the product reviews by “helpfulness” so that the most insightful and useful reviews bubble to the top, making it easier for customers to make an informed purchasing decision.

Verified buyers

If a customer who writes a review has actually purchased the product from Skiviez, they’ll get a “Verified Buyer” badge next to their review. This way, customers can know that the reviewer actually received the product and knows what he’s talking about.

Perhaps the most exciting feature of all is the ability for other customers to leave comments about reviews, enabling customers to have a public and informative discussion about the product in question. Review writers have the option to be notified by e-mail whenever new comments are posted to their reviews; the option is sitting in the “Profile” section of the “Your Account” section of our Web site.

Speaking of “profiles,” they’re new too! As mentioned before, the review system at Skiviez is seven years old, so a few quirks in the implementation had developed over that time. Since historically reviews had not been associated with customer shopping accounts, it was possible for review writers to make up a different display name for each and every review. The vast majority didn’t, and so we’ve unified the system by allowing you to set a global display name in your “Profile” that will be propagated to all of the reviews that you have left at Skiviez. (If you have left different display names on reviews over the years, they’ll be unified to your new display name the next time you update your “Profile” on our Web site.)

The new profile system also enables customers to quickly see all of the reviews that a particular writer has left. Following someone who has tastes similar to yours is now easier than ever!

Finally, a historical note. Customer reviews that were created prior to August 2007 were not associated with customer shopping accounts. If you left a review before that time, you won’t see a “Verified Buyer” badge or be able to edit the review via your shopping account. If you’d like, you can always e-mail us the Web page address and the text of the review that you’d like to have associated with your shopping account, and then you’ll be able to edit and take ownership of the review from there.
